Materials Matter!

ART LAB: Drawing, Painting & Collage

Hi All,

Sonoma Art School has recently received a lovely and very personal donation of high-quality soft pastels from the studio and estate of Kent Rupp who was one of the Bay Area Figurative painters and artist-rebels of the Beat Generation living in SF and North Beach in the 50’s and 60’s. https://www.rkentrupp.com/about-kent

Kent was a dear friend and a one-of-a-kind who left us way too soon in 2021.  Credit for the donation goes to his wife and our friend, Lili Butler, an amazing clothing designer, whose hope is to inspire young people’s creativity through professional materials such as these.  Through guidance and practice, students become aware of the precious and delicate nature of pastels and learn to appreciate their brilliant, glowing colors. Some of these pastels are still in their original and now vintage wooden boxes made in Holland and Germany.  Lili commented when she saw the pictures below, “Kent is smiling”.
