Winter After-School Art Program
January 7, 2024

Dear Sonoma Art School Community,
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our Winter After-School Art Program, starting on January 16th. Our diverse and engaging program is designed to ignite creativity and foster artistic expression among youth, teens, and tweens in our community. For younger students, emphasis is on exploration and experimentation with a wide variety of materials rather than focusing on a predetermined outcome. Older students gain context through famous contemporary and historical masters as they explore techniques and professional artists’ materials.

Class Offerings:

  • Pre K Adventures! : Garden Art Makers: Budding artists will experiment with a wide variety of materials - wood, wire, paint, found objects, fiber, etc - as they create fun and funky art for the garden and beyond. Students learn to restore, upcycle, convert and invent fun, eco art pieces such as decorative totems, mosaic flower pots, animal sculptures, bird houses, wind chimes and magical fairy houses.

  • Art Lab: Mixed Media Magic: Art lab, students explore materials both traditional and upcycled as they mix it up with charcoal, markers, paints, wood, wire, clay and collage materials. They will be given a description of their art project, examples by contemporary or modern masters and a demo before embarking on their own unique creations. This is an open-ended class producing different results for each student.

  • Comics + Characters: Get into Character! Students will create their own characters with hands-on demos in shape language, exaggeration and facial expressions. They will then craft their own comics exploring visual storytelling using industry techniques. This is a great class for students interested in character design, animation, graphic novels, comics, and cartooning.

  • Studio Art: Drawing, Painting & Collage: Students will practice drawing, painting and collage with various materials including: charcoal, graphite, colored pencils, ink, markers, watercolor and acrylic. They learn drawing techniques used in the studio such as shading, blending and building texture as well as the painting styles of various modern and contemporary artists. Students are also encouraged to experiment with various collage techniques using a variety of media.
